In the Internet, what is the difference between HITS and VISITS to a website?

My web hosting service provides info on how many visits and hits my website gets, but I don't understand exactly what hits is. Since I have, in June, 750 visits, and 58,000 hits. How are they related to each other?
In the Internet, what is the difference between HITS and VISITS to a website?
I believe hits is the number of times your site appears in searches, visits the number of times the link is followed (I mean, the site is opened) (i think)
In the Internet, what is the difference between HITS and VISITS to a website?
It means different things to different poeple, u need to ask the person giving you the information what it really means
Reply:hits are how many times people have redirected to your website. Visits are the people who actually downloaded any information
Reply:how many visits is how many different people have been to your site, hits are how many total visits you have.
Reply:Ever see the "hit counter" at the bottom of a web site? Or the claim of "We get 80,000 hits a month?" What does it all mean and is it accurate?

In a word, no.

What is the difference between a hit and a visitor? The difference between a "hit" and a "visitor" just may shock you. A "hit" is not a visitor but a hit on the web server. What is a hit on the web server? A graphic, java applet, the html file, etc. So, if a site has 79 small graphics on the page -- including the html file, every visitor to the site registers as 80 hits on the server! So, 80,000 hits translates to just a 1,000 visitors. Big difference, isn't it?

Unfortunately, many web site owners tell you the "hits" to purposely make you think that a "hit" is a "visitor". Don't be fooled again.

What about using counters? The problem with counters is they are set up to measure "page views" not unique visitors. After all, we are more concerned with unique visitors on the web. Counters can be manipulated easily.

For example, if you visit a web site and you see a counter, press the "Reload" button. Does the counter increase by one? If so, the counter is worthless. Do you see what the webmaster can do? Just sit there all day and hit reload and increase the hit count. But why do that? Counters can be set at any starting value. Just start it at 3,123,984 and show your friends what a great site you have. Or do you?

We suggest that you not have a counter on your site. But, without a counter, how do you know what your traffic is?

Use a web traffic analysis program.

Your web host should automatically provide you with a traffic analysis program. For some of you, their freebie may not be enough to tell you all that you want to know.

Reply:A Hit is a request to a Web server for a file (image, HTML, javascript or cascading style sheet etc). When a webpage is uploaded from a server the number of "Hits" or "Page hits" is equal to the number of files requested, therefore one page load does not always equal one hit because often pages are made up of other images and other files which stack up the number of hits counted. Because one page load does not equal one hit it is an inaccurate measure of a websites popularity or web traffic. A more accurate measure of web traffic is how many page views a web site has. Hits are useful when evaluating the requirements of your server, depending on the number and size of files which need to be transferred for one request. Servers should be tested to make sure they meet throughput targets (they should be capable of processing a certain amount of 'hits' per second).

A request for a file from the web server. Available only in log analysis. The number of hits received by a website is frequently cited to assert its popularity, but this number is extremely misleading and dramatically over-estimates popularity. A single web-page typically consists of multiple (often dozens) of discrete files, each of which is counted as a hit as the page is downloaded, so the number of hits is really an arbitrary number more reflective of the complexity of individual pages on the website than the website's actual popularity. The total number of visitors or page views provides a more realistic and accurate assessment of popularity.
Reply:hits are when they go to your web sight. Visits are when they

navigate on your web sight. just the most simple answer.
