How does ECommerce work?

Maybe I'm not getting it because I'm at work, or just having a slow day, but has anyone used ECommerce and can explain to me how it works? There are no charges listed on their site, they claim to be free. Are they really a free web hosting service? And do you have to register your domain name with another service? Do you set up your website through ECommerce or somewhere else? I'm so confused . . .
How does ECommerce work?
First of all nothing is free. But setting up a website doesn't cost much. You can put up your own things to sell. Use paypal (buy now) buttons for payment. This all for 50$ a year.
