Can't access web site hosted by Yahoo Small Business, Can I Sue them?
I have been calling both verizon and yahoo for nearly 2 weeks, with no results. A yahoo tech told me the problem was verizon needs to unmerge my site from verizon. Verizon won't assist me at all, they just hang up on me. Yahoo keeps sending me the same answer which requires me to log on that does not work. I am up to date on bill payments etc. but Yahoo web hosting will not help me. Just wondering if I have a case to sue them. I am paying for a service that I am not being allowed to access? I really do need to make some changes to the site but my site builder will no longer sign on correctly. The Verizon transfer program does not function at all. I have spoke to a dozen different techs and keep getting the run around. What should I do to get some real results?

This sounds quite harsh, but I'd perhaps re-think your design and layout. I've recently been hunting high and low for a web designer, hosting domain names etc and have been extremely put off by bad layout.
The fact that you've got a free website, with loads of banners and adverts would make me think that you're a part-timer, who would take the money and not do the job.
The design of your website isn't easy to navigate, the flash image is awful on the eyes. I wouldn't let you design my website incase I got the same thing.
Just a few suggestions:
* Make all the colours compliment each other- they clash at the minute
* Improve your own layout
* Include a portfolio
* Get yourself onto a paid website to prove that you take business seriously.
I know that what I've said does sound quite nasty, but if you don't present your own business well then people won't trust you with theirs. Take a look at your competition.

Anyway, here's my question: I've seen a couple of online businesses with free web hosting accounts (i.e. angelfire, bravenet) that have been selling products and services. It's obvious that they are indeed free accounts because of the url (angelfire.com/yournamehere). Is this allowed on a free geocities account? I'm a poor web designer who can't afford to pay for web hosting right now, so I'm kinda desperate to start making some money. Thanks to anyone that can help!

I have taken my web design certification, but missed the first classes where we discussed web hosting and the like. See, I have been doing the one on one connection with clients. I've made some lifelong contacts and loyal customers that won't go to anyone else for their design needs.
But I have had clients that made me want to rip out my hair, scream and toss in the towel without a glance back!
I've been lucky not to have had many of those, but they are out there. So you need to be prepared to be eaten alive and torn apart by the worst of them if you want to survive in this niche.
Another thing that is happening is that it is getting easier and easier for anyone to make their own websites. The software is out there and it's getting easier to use...faster, more professional - AND they don't have to know one tag or line of script to make a drop down awesome site.
It stinks! But that's the reality to it...I've come to the decision that after all these years, I'm going to keep my clients and those that they refer me too I will consider. But I am going to do what I love to do - create websites!
Most designers live for the design and the creation of a vision. So if that is what you love, then do it. Then sell the sites for a price. If someone wants to buy it and have you customize it a little, that's easier than starting from scratch.

one more thing, go find some small enterprises on such advertisements for web design( whatever that relates your field) and pick it.... it's a great one way of advertising yourself and the same time practice right?

Here goes... yes, I could offer a bunch of advice on web hosting and web design and even programming. However, none of that is going to make your job any easier, because what you're about to enter is highly COMPETITIVE.
And there is an answer to that.. DON'T be competitive. Instead, focus on giving your clients something with real value. Focus on giving them MORE than their money's worth, and new clients will be knocking your door down.
This isn't a new principle... it's been around for almost a hundred years. If you're up for a bit of reading, check out this online book. If you make it to the finish, it will be worth your while. And yes, it's all free...

You need to reassign the to a new port, and include it on your url.
Instead of http;//www.MySite.com
it will read http;//www.MySite.com:8080 or whatever port you reassign it to.

Best design for a crawling web service?
I'm developing a web service which returns the latest stock prices on a market. I've no access to the stock data. Instead I chose to scrap a HTML page to generate the data. At present my web service will do this scrapping whenever accessed. There is a performance flaw on this approach. The traffic of my hosting server shoots up for each of the service invocation. So I've two solutions to cut down the traffic.
1. Using a windows service that scraps the source HTML page in regular intervals and update a database, which will be read by the web service whenever invoked and returns the updated stock price.
2. Make the web service to update the database after scraping the HTML page, so that requests in next 10 minutes (or so) will get the data from the database, rather than scrapping the HTML page for every request.
For an user base of say 100, what will be optimal solution and why? Can you suggest a good choice for me?

Usually, when you're given a domain name and webspace, you will have to configure your webspace to respond to those accessing the domain name. Some webspace provider have its own control panel (cPanel, Plesk, Virtuozzo, etc) that will allow you to defined the domain name to direct traffic to your webspace.
In some cases, when you were given the webspace and the domain name, it's already linked.
Check with your service provider customer support for documentation on how to configure your domain name to work with your webspace.

How do I insert a logo/graphic file in my e-mail signature?
Our web host service says we have to enter html code pointing to a web page containing the file. They also say we have a page available with our package, but they can't help me with the code. I need to know the best way to do this. Can't I just embed the graphic in the emails somehow? (Intuitively something tells me that's not going to work - How could it?) So anyway, how do I get access to this page they're telling me I have, then get the graphic of our logo loaded there? I guess by then I'll know the html code to enter in our email signature(s).

If you get an external solution, then you need a SSL certificate which is used to encypt the customer/transcation information over the net. So the information will not be compromised. For the storage, I would suggest using a mySQL database.

I've been working on a newer website for my business and it was suggested for hosting services to be used as a startup process for it. I was wondering if anyone here has used Hostmonster.com for their web and how you like the service? I found that they are within a Better Business Bureau's website Database in one of Utah's BBB branches, but it shows limited information at this time for they are being checked out still for BBB to provide complete details. Yahoo! and Sun Java are also having conflicts. Rather than trying to work around them, here is the easy and fastest way to cure them (for most). Go to Tools, open Internet Options, and select Advance tab. Scroll down the list and see if you have Microsoft Virtual Machine listed, if so, uncheck the 2 java鈥檚 listed. Make sure JIT is checked, click apply then ok. and then Close. This lets MSN virtual machine launch Yahoo! mail. I reccomend that you use Original Mail until beta works out the bugs. FYI, beta means TESTING. Go back to IE6 which works just fine and is problem free. It is still installed on your pc. If you are using Yahoo Mail Plus, and your server farm has problems, switch to the free service until things are worked out.
If not:
You will have less problems with Mail if you sign in via Messenger! Go to preferences, general, then check box: Automatically sign me in when I click a Yahoo! link in Messenger. Then click on the little envelope icon on top of messenger box. Or go to My Yahoo and click on your mail link. Or click on the Big RED Y! on the Yahoo! Toolbar. Bottom line is any link that already has you signed in!!!

I need to host a dedicated server. Since I鈥檝e 2 desktops but I only need one, I want to host IIS web server at home running ASP.Net with SQL Server 2005 like godaddy鈥檚 dedicated server.
My questions are
1) Is there any web hosting company that can provide DNS service? Can godaddy provide that? Ex. When someone type www.mywebsite.com , I want the user to forward my home static IP.
2) As far as I know most COX ISP doesn鈥檛 provide fast upload speed. Can I request to COX to have more upload speed? Or is there any ISP that can provide fast upload speed 2Mbps or higher.
