Inexpensive but reliable web host...does it exist?

I have 2 small business websites at the moment...I pay $30 a year for each. They both started out with 50MB storage %26amp; 1000MB transfer. On one of them, I bought 50MB more storage. Domain was/is free.

However, I am constantly having problems with them. The websites will go down during peak hours for no reason, mail service is sporadic, I have deleted 3/4 of my website because they say I keep going over my limit...this is on the 100MB one.

I feel like I should look for a new one, but I really can't spend much more than $60 total a year for the two together. I know you can get multiple domains now under some hosting plans, but by the time you pay for the extra domains, it's not cheap anymore.

Where can I find something reasonable? Having all the bells %26amp; whistles is not a priority, but would be nice.

I use webhostingbuzz.com - it's reliable, and for $3/month you get 30GB space and 1000GB transfer/month. That's a lot better than your current one!

What's more, you can host multiple domains on the one hosting account. (Remember, domains themselves should only cost you $9 - e.g. at namecheap.com).

So, if there's enough space on that one account, you should only have to pay $36/year or $54 if you register for two years.

I've been with WHB for a while now, and they seem to be for real. Good luck!!

I use Lunarpages - has never been down, and I run 5 sites at a time off one account. More expensive than what you are paying, and worth it

Dreamhost review sites offer a discount code and coupon promotion of almost every description. I am a returning customer and need to renew my web hosting. My free domain is also coming up for renewal. Does Dreamhost offer discount vouchers for customers renewing their hosting service, and does this include a free domain renewal too? It would appear that there is some misinformation circulating the

Internet about what returning Dreamhost customers can and can't do.

Some have stated that 'opening a new account, you are not complying

We are a gaming company with over 5000 beta signups for our beta. It seems that almost 40% of our emails end up in our beta players' junk mail, unless they specifically add us to their approved list. We are not sending junkmail, but often important announcements. Players are upset they have not received the notice. We have checked with our web host and they have done what they can to assure that all of our settings are right, that our emails aren't sent out in too big a volume at a time, and that we have no bad keywords that should be causing any filter red flags. What can we do? Is there a "secure" hosting service out there that guarantees that its users don't spam through them, which the gmails and yahoos and hotmails recognize as self-policing so they won't filter emails from that host? If so, sign me up, I'll go with any host who can get my emails through to my clients. We're losing a lot of money due to inability to communicate!

You will need to educate your clients.

Perhaps when the first sign up for service explain to them from the beginning that they should add your email address to the "safe" recipient list.

Even if it means showing them screen shots and having a whole page on your servers or website to educate them about the possibility of future important notices to be blocked by their spam filters.

Perhaps giving them an option to see the latest important bulletin or announcement on the websever themselves, like a message board or something.

Maybe you should consider setting up a webmail service ( or just an Inbox for messages only) for each of your clients so they can see important emails on the server with out using their own email clients.

Doesn't have to be massive in space, you can make it so they can only hold 2-4 mb of information.

I'm considering using a hosted web design service (www.brightegg.com) as I like the combination of CMS and decent templates they have.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any similar alternatives? I aware of OS solutions like Joomla, but the free templates I have seen suck quite badly.

With Brightegg I am prepared to pay for the premium templates as it is cheaper than paying for a designer.

If you plan to have a successful website you do not want to use a template. it is bad for SEO and is just one of many cookie cutter methods that will give you low rankings. Focus more on the server technologies and try getting a dedicated server.

Google doesn't care (or even know) if your website is hosted on a dedicated server or not. Hosted solutions are fine as long as the end result looks good.

How to i add my site to the dns host server?
There are several things required to host a site on your local machine besides DNS. DNS just does a lookup to send requests to the correct IP it is NOT A HOST!

Here is what you have to have in order to host a site.

1. Web Server on your local computer.

You can use IIS (microsofts web server), PWS (microsofts personal web server - visit Microsoft for details on getting them setup, not too hard but not easy either) or Apache a free webserver for linux, windows, or any OS. Currently Apache is the number one choice for most internet web servers!

http://apache.org you can also find easy to install packages for your computer. Once the webserver is working the DNS will point to that server and it will respond. You do have to have Apache or IIS working for them to send back a page!

2. An established web site for that Web server! You can build one and put the pages in the correct directory depending on the web server you are using. IIS uses a different directory than does Apache so all depends on the web server where you need to load your website!

3. You need to forward port 80 for the web server to work. That also means you need to change your routers default management page from port 80 to something else or it will not forward! You can change your routers port to 8080 or 81 etc using the routers setup pages.

4. You need to be sure your ISP (who supplies your connection) allows you to run a server! This is important because if they don't and you try you will find it simply won't work or you will find you will get dropped and have NO INTERNET for violating the terms of service.

5. You need your DNS pointed to YOUR IP which is all you have setup at this point!

In other words there is more too it than simple DNS entry!

ALL DNS DOES is point a name (your domain name) to your IP! It does nothing else nor can it.

GO to the Apache site, read and re-read it.

Once you understand what is involved you will see why paying a couple of dollars per month is well worth the expense for website hosting! Don't forget if your computer turns off, so does your website, if you cable or DSL goes down, so does your website. AND the outbound speed of your connection will limit the amount of users that can see your website at one time. Generally this is low on most home connections!

If you're hosting the site on your PC, then just edit the content on your PC! Make sure that your router is forwarding port 80 to your PC.

Dyndns.com only handles the name resolution for you. You need to tell them the public IP address of your connection, either manually or by installing one of the many dynamic dns monitoring clients on one of your systems. Once that's done, ping your dyndns url and make sure that name resolution is working properly, i.e. that it responds with the IP address of your external interface.

I can't tell you how to edit your content as I don't even know what web server you're running. Read the docs.

And as to configuring dyndns, it's all on their website. Again, read and you will be enlightened.

Reply:You need to load and run a web server on your machine. You then need to set up port forwarding on your router pointing to your internal IP address for all the ports you require. You also need to open these ports in the exception list on your firewall. You then place your pages in the document root of the server. Just having the dynamic dns should mean external machines will reach your public IP address, but you can not use it from your own network, as it will be looking at your router from the wrong side. I find dynamic dns very unreliable for this, better is a fixed public IP address, but you need to pay more to your ISP for this. Also many ISPs will not allow you to run a web server, they block port 80 incoming unless you subscribe to a business dsl account.

One really good, visitor-friendly way to do it? Embed a Flash player that will let people play the MP3's without downloading.

I normally use the Drupal content management system for this, and it's set of Flash tools...

I'm thinking about taking my small retail store on line. I'm looking for places to start researching ecommerce back ends and other information for those starting from scratch. I'm talking about selling individual items, so it will need to be a scalable database system (starting with 20 items eventually going to 100 or more). It needs to be totally web based. I want to be able to check system status, make updates, etc from any Internet connected PC.

If you started your own ecommerce site from scratch, please chime in. If you found any web sites or books that provided helpful info, let me know. I'm hoping to avoid early pitfalls from those that have already been through this. Something with a check list of things to think about/address would be great. I can't access my web host's webmail and admin tools, so I contacted their tech support. They want me to email them my login%26amp;password. They're a small company with good customer service, and I don't wanna be a douche, but isn't there something against giving away your password to anyone?

If you think I shouldn't, what's your sound reasoning?

If they truly need your login and password then you should call them directly and provide it to them and then change it immediately after the issue is resolved.

If this company is asking you to email them your information then you should seriously considuer going with a different company. If they are this lax with the security then what other areas of security are they lax with? Email is sent in what is known as "clear text" unless you specifically use a program to encrypt it... which means that anyone could intercept the email, you could accidentally send it to the wrong address, etc... etc... plus, it would remain on their servers for anyone to find regardless of whether they themseves deleted it.

If a company I did business with showed this kind of security un-awareness and gross neglect for the security of my information... I would have a serious issue with it as a security professional.

Yes I think you should never give login%26amp;password info to anyone. Let alone over E-mail. Any company can gain access to you're account they control. they might need to reset the password to do so. but thats as easy as sending you a temp password that you can reset once you've regained access to your account. Ask them to do so. If they're really that small and don't know how or are unwilling at least go to them in person so you know that someone has not intersepted your email and you know who you're talking too.

This is my profesional opinion, If they can't work with you maybe you need a better solution.
Reply:I would not do it. It doesn't sound right. I have worked with several different hosting companies and no one in tech support has ever asked me for my password. I have been asked for my account login before, but I would never give out my password. They should be able to analyze the problem through their system and see everything they need to see. If they think your problem may be your password, they should simply reset it.

Even if it is legitimate, don't send the information via email. Speak to them over the phone. If they don't offer phone support find another company! You don't want to waste time and energy trying to diagnose problems using email. There are too many reliable, low-cost hosting companies out there like www.oneworlddomains.com or www.godaddy.com that offer 24/7 phone support, to stay with someone who doesn't.

What made YAHOO popular certainly wasn't their search engine, I believe it was their "Chat Rooms" that was their major draw card. However when you sign up for a Hosting Account with AT%26amp;T / YAHOO then don't even offer you the courtesy of letting you add even a text chat, or voice chat to your web site. Don't you think that that should be an option in their add-ons?

I'm trying to set up a website, nothing special, just testing out my newly learnt skills. I'm practicing by making a site offering my web design services, but i won't really be using it.

I'm studying from w3schools, and have only done X/HTML %26amp; CSS so far.

I'm trying to get ideas about what a web designer should put on the homepage/site

So far...

Homepage - I have three short paragraphs explaining what the site is about and what is on offer.

Links to other pages (not made the pages yet) (hosting/domain name - these pages will have links to hosting companies and Domain Name providers)

I have yahoo'd and google'd 'web designers' to get some ideas and with respect, some sites are just cr@p.

Can i be really cheeky and see some of your sites (if you are web designers by trade)?

Is there any thing in particular i need to add?

Is it ok to use tables instead of frames/nav bar as i hate them with a passion?

I programmed B2B and B2C sites for about nine years as a captive employee and everything non-web for about twenty, both captive and consultant. I've decided to go freelance, but don't yet have a portfolio, since everything I've done is proprietary to my previous employers. My solution will be to provide samples based on templates that I'll offer for sale. For a number of different site models, I'll provide page examples to give prospective customers ideas. A template sale will be cheaper than a full, original design - it'll take me lots less time to do, once I have the templates available, and I can sell them cheaper.

The page is a very straight, simple links listing for web-geeks. The virtues are XHTML for structure, CSS for appearance, JavaScript for behavior. Separate these aspects to the fullest extent possible.

I actually loved frames, but they're a really bad model for commercial sites. Frames give web spiders fits, and that's bad for your customers' SEO interests. Tables should not, I stress NOT, be used for layout. CSS is hugely more effective, flexible, robust, and standards-compliant. There are potential clients who have just enough wit to check under the hood of your portfolio or sample pages, checking the source. There are fellow developers and designers who might consider farming overflow work to you, who will definitely check your code. You'll look like an unqualified amateur to anyone who examines your source and sees tables applied for layout.

Practically, add conventions and standards. Pick an X/HTML document type and code to it (I prefer XHTML 1.0 currently). Validate your X/HTML and CSS, using the W3C validators; this removes the ambiguity of "quirky" browser treatments and evolves your understanding to a deep, correct one with respect to at least one model to which browser manufacturers are expected to become increasingly compliant. Follow CSS and web accessibility (WA) guidelines; find a validator for WA and use it (I recommend one under the "validators" link on the page I offered). Being meticulously rigorous with your code will provide a better, more robust and easily supportable product; those are major factors in retaining clients.

Read lists, articles, and geek sites, looking for new ideas and solutions.

Use short paragraphs and incorporate your Keywords into the page. Remember you can link to the interior pages from the home page so write in a fashion that gets the viewers attention.

Reply:To answer the table part of your question - tables should be avoided unless it is actually for tabular data (eg. a table containing price) - tables shouldn't be used for layout purposes (one of the many reasons for this is that tables throw off screen readers, making the site hard to use for the disabled)

If you want a better way of laying out pages, have a look at DIVs. There will probably be a lot about DIVs on w3schools.

Pages you could include in a website could be a portfolio page (showing potential customers some previous work you have done) and a contact page, to allow potential customers to send you a message, or phone number/email address.

Reply:The approach to this will depend on your actual role as a designer. Are you looking to work for a design shop? Then the actual design will be your only task. If, on the other hand, you'll be dealing directly with the clients yourself, as a consultant, then one way to make yourself stand out from the rest is to give them not only what they want in terms of appearance, but explain what they NEED to get the RESULTS they want, which may not be the same thing.

What I try to accomplish with my web pages is to make the total page load no more then 100k. (But sometimes it's a little difficult). This is to help the people who are still on dial up not get discouraged when it takes forever for a page to load.

After I've created the page graphics, I use a program called WebGraphics Optimizer ( http://webopt.com/ ) to help compress the graphics to make them smaller so they load faster.

...As you can see by Andy's suggestions, he is an anti table guy, whereas I use tables in order to position everything exactly where I want it to be on a page. Everyones got their own ideas, you just have to find what you like best and what type of webpage surfer you want to attract and then go for it.

Reply:Copyright law is already in place for what you put on the web.

The trouble lies in enforcing it.

One thing you might do is what writers do with their for-print work... when you put a major new writing on your website, print it out and mail a certified, registered copy to yourself. That way, if it's ever an issue, you have physical, sealed proof that you had it first.

Another thing... just for the sake of completeness, put a copyright notice in the footer of all your web pages (if you're using a content management system, you can set that up once and it will automatically display on all pages).

All web pages are in HTML format - that's the language of the web. PHP is a way of adding dynamic content to HTML, so PHP pages are better in that they can do more.

You can paste PHP scripts into a web page. The scripts have to be marked off by %26lt;?php at the start and ?%26gt; at the end. On most systems you also have to name your file with a .php extension so the server will know to look for the code.

Reply:HTML and PHP are two different languages. They have different uses. HTML is a client side language which will render a static page on the client computer. PHP is a server side scripting language which can deliver dynamic web content to a client computer. PHP is a language which can communicate with the server to provide connections to the database, a mail server and host of other services to deliver content to the web page.

One is neither better or worse than the other... they server different functions.

Most web sites or hosting services will be able to render html pages. If you want to use PHP scripts, you would need to make sure that the hosting service supports PHP. PHP is one of the languages of choice to connect with a database [such as mysql] to store things such as email addresses or phone numbers.

You can not normally just cut and paste a PHP script into an HTML document. You need to have a .php page for the page to render the PHP script on the webpage.

Recently I got a couple of domains from Network Solutions. A colleague in IT just raved about how they're the best, they have the most services, they're the Hertz/VISA/Nike/AmazoneBay of web services - how could I go wrong?

Well, I'm thinking I did go wrong. Though my friend touted the "free" website setup I could get at NS, I ended up paying $60 annual for lowest-tier web hosting. That's OK, but then I found out I had to use THEIR web design tool - and after a 30-day trial, THAT will also cost me. Further, their tool is worse than inflexible - it fails to function because it overrides or erases my setup.

What I'm thinking now is to transfer my domains (since I own them now) to another web service (GoDaddy or some other). I want to contact my credit card company and cancel the web hosting/design tool part of my purchase with NS.

Has anyone dealt with managing their own domains and websites? Any *good* advice (as opposed to my colleague's) as to what my options are now?

You can leave the domain names registered with NS if you want. I have found them to be reliable for domain registration. You can then host your domain at any location that you want.

Domain name registration and web site hosting are separate functions and don't have to be at the same company. I have worked with numerous companies that host their own site but register the domain name else where. It is a fairly easy process. All you will need to do is once you have the web hosting site ensure they enter the proper DNS records for your site. That will then propagate across the Internet. You can tell NS where the site is once you set it up and they can also update their DNS and WHOIS database.

You were not necessarily ripped off.

Maybe they used a Pay to surf program. A program like that redirect the traffic through the same ip. That explains why you've seen the same ip and OS in your logs.

But even if you get 10.000 visitors, by the way they might be real, this kind of traffic is useless as the users are being paid just to open sites, not for evaluating them.

I am a designer in the UK and I am creating 'yet another' video sharing site for the Web 2.0 bubble (Don't panic, it's a good one).

They are AWESOME! I used them for my podcast until i found an alternate route. They are really professional, and offer TONS of services. I reccomend this host to everyone looking for a professional service that offers upgrades and everything. Space is good too, and same with bandwidth. Check out the options, and if you wanna include PHP, go with the linux hosting options, as MS doesn't quite have that down yet, and don't work.

I have some experience supporting a large website, but not with the entire design process yet. But I really enjoy doing this type of work and would love to make money doing it. I have most of the software I think I would need (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc), as well as space with a hosting service. I am still working on my personal website and I don't have much to include for a personal portfolio yet. What would be the best steps to take to really venture out on my own by starting my own web design business and find potential customers? With all of the 'do it yourself' templates out now, is there a big demand for this type of work still?
What should I know in starting up my own web design business?
First, be sure you're good at it. I know that sounds really critical, but there are a lot of people out there that enjoy designing websites and 'think' that they're good, but they aren't. Make sure you add value to the industry.

Next, try getting business owners you know to hand over their website design requirements. Build one or two for little cost. You'll build references and a portfolio.

Then try to find places to gather new clients. Do you fit into a niche where no one else offers a good service? Do you provide back-end programming or just front-end design? Market to specific clients and serve that sector well! You can also find websites like elance.com and others that allow you to bid on open project requests.

Do good work, always treat your clients right and keep strong referral networks going. Never stop networking. Best of luck!

I have an application that is installed through a setup created by Installshield version 11. The application is used internally by my firm on our LAN. Once the application is installed on the host computer I need to pass information back to my group to indicate who installed the application and the date and time they installed it. We need to track this information for marketing purposes.

I am considering having the setup program call a web service that will allow this information to be passed. However there doesn't seem to be any built in capabilities in Installshield to directly handle a web service call. Has anyone ever done this before?

Secondly, if you don't host the domain on a server, there will be no site for people to visit. The domain name is just an address to the server your site is on.

You need to have some kind of video to stream, that source can be from a webcam or video camera. You also need to have someone hosting your site.

You need some kind of camera for that. Call it a webcam or not, you need some kind of video camera.

Then you need a web server capable of serving streams. don't worry, you won't get that for $10 a month, because you will need a higher tier of service then that. At the very least, yo are going to need a VPS or more likely a dedicated server.

Then you are going to need enough bandwidth each month to cover the video uploads and downloads (streams) alike. How much depends on how popular your site is, and if everyone watches all at once or not.

Then you need to know how to administer the computer, both for functionality, and for security matters.

then you have to make an actual web site, of which registering a domain at godaddy.com and causing it to be located on your server is pretty easy.

Then all you have to do is get the word out for people to visit your web site :)

You might be able to practice this, or at least try stuff out, at home with a version of the linux operating system called Dynebolic. Look up their web site, and you will find a community and lots of free software you can probably use on the PC you already have to get a handle on things.

If you are dead set against paying for a real hosting service with real bandwidth, you can do what I mentioned using dynebolic hooked up to your home dsl or cable network, but the upload speeds are probably going to be insufficient to do more then one or two simultaneous streams of any quality. But you can at least practice with that - what you learn will be directly transferable to a real web host.

I've got a Web Hosting Starter service with Yahoo. I created two emails for two different users, but I'm receiving the other user's emails. I tried to change my email details it in the Control panel but "it finds an error" and doesn't change anything. I believe it's a software bug but I don't know how to contact Yahoo staff (their "contact us" section doesn't seem to be working). Any ideas?

example: is there ANY online way to edit a page on my site hosted on godaddy (except use of godaddy's own lame system) ????

if the website builders and templates and all that stuff is ONLY a FEATURE of a hosting service, then why all the big promotion of the 'website builders' and 'online html editors' by independent parties?

I have never seen any tools hoasted online, and if they are I doubt they are free. Dreamweaver is not that expensive and is a very powerfull, and easy to use. I would strongly recommend it if you are looking to build your website.

Firsly, on yoiur site, you have a typo in your email address. Secondly, you are required to put full contact details on your site, as if it were a piece of letterhead - a postal address, a phone number and who you are (your name if you are a sole trader, for example).

Anyway, ebay offer a new classifieds service which is free. I am a copywriter and had work from there in the first month I advertised. Good luck!

However, since you are asking for recommendations, I have found "GoDaddy" to be reasonably priced as well as stable for web-hosting. My one complaint would be the small size (10Mb) for the available email accounts. Their "free" account is only 25Mb. However, you can Yahoo! and have a larger free email account. Seriously, though, consider proofreading your submissions before clicking on the "Send" button.

Seriously - if you have the capital I would look into a recruitment company. They've already got all the requirements and resumes on hand; no need to do all the dirty work yourselves if you don't have to. Be aware that recruitment companies are the real deal, if you're not incorporated and able to pay them up front they're not even going to thank you for trying as you're escorted from the building.

If you don't have the capital... well... get used to sorting through piles and piles of crappy websites. Your only real option is to post 'web designers needed' ads in every available niche and then wade through the volumes of responses for the occasional gem.

My current hosting provider is Yahoo and they have MySQL version 4.1 (no problem there - it has InnoDB tables), but they only allow me to create MyISAM tables, which won't cut it for my app.

When I Google for web hosting, I get pages like "The 10 Best Hosting Services!" --once I traced the IP/domain of the #1 company on the list, and guess what? They were the ones who published this "survey" through another name! Shysters.

I need to write a web service and am undecided as to whether I should use Perl or ASP.NET with Mono (Java is out of the running altogether). My biggest concern is compatibility; I don't know what kind of hosting the customer is willing to dish out for yet, so I want it to be able to run (with minimal modifications) on IIS or Apache. How good is Apache's mod_mono in terms of speed and reliability? Is implementing Perl's SOAP::Transport::HTTP::Apache module a nightmare? Is Perl going to cause trouble if the service's consumer is a C# program running on Windows? I'll give points to the most detailed answer, not the timeliest one.

Perl's soap::lite will talk to anybody! a few tweaks and it will talk to the pickiest soapers!

ASP is a dead end in microsoft land. I'd stay away, unless you have dozens of programmers to back you up tracking down MS bugs!

I have been calling both verizon and yahoo for nearly 2 weeks, with no results. A yahoo tech told me the problem was verizon needs to unmerge my site from verizon. Verizon won't assist me at all, they just hang up on me. Yahoo keeps sending me the same answer which requires me to log on that does not work. I am up to date on bill payments etc. but Yahoo web hosting will not help me. Just wondering if I have a case to sue them. I am paying for a service that I am not being allowed to access? I really do need to make some changes to the site but my site builder will no longer sign on correctly. The Verizon transfer program does not function at all. I have spoke to a dozen different techs and keep getting the run around. What should I do to get some real results?

This sounds quite harsh, but I'd perhaps re-think your design and layout. I've recently been hunting high and low for a web designer, hosting domain names etc and have been extremely put off by bad layout.

The fact that you've got a free website, with loads of banners and adverts would make me think that you're a part-timer, who would take the money and not do the job.

The design of your website isn't easy to navigate, the flash image is awful on the eyes. I wouldn't let you design my website incase I got the same thing.

Just a few suggestions:

* Make all the colours compliment each other- they clash at the minute

* Improve your own layout

* Include a portfolio

* Get yourself onto a paid website to prove that you take business seriously.

I know that what I've said does sound quite nasty, but if you don't present your own business well then people won't trust you with theirs. Take a look at your competition.

I'm new to this so I wasn't sure how to categorize this. Anyway, here's my question: I've seen a couple of online businesses with free web hosting accounts (i.e. angelfire, bravenet) that have been selling products and services. It's obvious that they are indeed free accounts because of the url (angelfire.com/yournamehere). Is this allowed on a free geocities account? I'm a poor web designer who can't afford to pay for web hosting right now, so I'm kinda desperate to start making some money. Thanks to anyone that can help!

I am Looking for domain registrar who provides free hosting. I have used Registerfly who's customer support is a joke.

Most I found provides simple parking page or so unless if you add hosting service which is $5-10 a month. All I am looking for is low price domain tranfer/register service with a small (about 50mb) web space and email; pop3 or forwarding service.

I have taken my web design certification, but missed the first classes where we discussed web hosting and the like. I would like to be a freelance web designer but I would like to know the best process to go about offering my services. What is the proper process I would use to build a website for someone? I can handle the graphic design part, the javascript, html, etc. Just need to know the hosting process and stuff, in terms of offering my service to others.

Oh boy, that's a tall order...well, I've been doing this for a while and the first thing you need to do is decide what sort of web designer you are going to be.

See, I have been doing the one on one connection with clients. I've made some lifelong contacts and loyal customers that won't go to anyone else for their design needs.

But I have had clients that made me want to rip out my hair, scream and toss in the towel without a glance back!

I've been lucky not to have had many of those, but they are out there. So you need to be prepared to be eaten alive and torn apart by the worst of them if you want to survive in this niche.

Another thing that is happening is that it is getting easier and easier for anyone to make their own websites. The software is out there and it's getting easier to use...faster, more professional - AND they don't have to know one tag or line of script to make a drop down awesome site.

It stinks! But that's the reality to it...I've come to the decision that after all these years, I'm going to keep my clients and those that they refer me too I will consider. But I am going to do what I love to do - create websites!

Most designers live for the design and the creation of a vision. So if that is what you love, then do it. Then sell the sites for a price. If someone wants to buy it and have you customize it a little, that's easier than starting from scratch.

I like godaddy for hosting and such because the cost is reasonable. Domains are a good price too and there is help just a phone call away to tech support at anytime 24/7!

You can check out guru.com and offer your services there if you want to go that way. Or search for projects to see what you want to make a bid for.

There are several freelance sites that offer this option.

In the end, you need to decide what will make you happy and allow you to be free to choose what you're doing and how you do it.

Its as much your perspective and how you see your business as the actual running of the business. In this, attitude counts big time. That and studying...a lot!

I wish you luck as in this industry, it is a never ending cycle of learning and trying to keep up with the changes and moods of the technical world.

I would first start with displaying your skills and background on craigslist. Then from there try moving into social networks. when you first start out you have to hustle and market yourself until word of mouth or referals take care of the rest for you.
Reply:Well first you'll need to build a portfolio. Obviously, people won't hire you if you don't show them what you can do.

Then set up your own website. Make it nice and elegant, remember you're offering to make similar ones to clients. Be sure to set up an e-commerce account.

Then promote your site! Advertise and SEO.

Understand that businesses don't get built overnight. It takes time and energy. Be patient and work at it, and I'm sure you'll make it. I'm sixteen and working towards becoming a web designer, and my mentor says he charges $40-$120 per hour for freelance work he does. Yeah, that's big.

one more thing, go find some small enterprises on such advertisements for web design( whatever that relates your field) and pick it.... it's a great one way of advertising yourself and the same time practice right?

Here goes... yes, I could offer a bunch of advice on web hosting and web design and even programming. However, none of that is going to make your job any easier, because what you're about to enter is highly COMPETITIVE.

And there is an answer to that.. DON'T be competitive. Instead, focus on giving your clients something with real value. Focus on giving them MORE than their money's worth, and new clients will be knocking your door down.

This isn't a new principle... it's been around for almost a hundred years. If you're up for a bit of reading, check out this online book. If you make it to the finish, it will be worth your while. And yes, it's all free...

Cox blocks port 80, 25, and 21 to non-commercial accounts. This is to stop home users from running a HTTP, FTP, or MAIL server form the residence.

You need to reassign the to a new port, and include it on your url.

Instead of http;//www.MySite.com

it will read http;//www.MySite.com:8080 or whatever port you reassign it to.

You need to go into your router, and divert the public IP address to be port-forwarded to your private IP.
Reply:Many residential cable and DSL operators dont want their customers hosting websites. They discourage this in a few ways.

1. By using PPP or on-demand connections. When you have a software package you have to install on your computer before using your DSL/cable modem.

2. By blocking various ports. Such as 80, http, and 25, smtp (mail) inbound.

3. By giving you dynamic IP addresses. Your IP address keeps changing every few hours or each time you login.

However, there are a few ways around this. I myself use SBC DSL and host a website and mail server.

You need two things basically. Sometimes they can be combined into one service.

1. Dynamic DNS. This is a service that maps your domain name to your constantly change IP address. There are many providers. I use a very reliable one called www.dyndns.org.

2. Port forwarding/relay (if necessary). If you find that your provider is blocking ports, you may need to sign up for a relay or port forwarder. (Sending port 80 to 8080, etc.) www.dyndns.org can do this, or others.

Best design for a crawling web service?

I'm developing a web service which returns the latest stock prices on a market. I've no access to the stock data. Instead I chose to scrap a HTML page to generate the data. At present my web service will do this scrapping whenever accessed. There is a performance flaw on this approach. The traffic of my hosting server shoots up for each of the service invocation. So I've two solutions to cut down the traffic.

1. Using a windows service that scraps the source HTML page in regular intervals and update a database, which will be read by the web service whenever invoked and returns the updated stock price.

2. Make the web service to update the database after scraping the HTML page, so that requests in next 10 minutes (or so) will get the data from the database, rather than scrapping the HTML page for every request.

For an user base of say 100, what will be optimal solution and why? Can you suggest a good choice for me?

I had my website built for $75 by an Indian, and he was fantastic I should say except for some spelling mistakes on the page which he promptly rectified without complain. The good thing is he worked 7 days time for that trifle amount. But, that was in 2004. Now, from what I hear, rates have risen a bit even in India. Still, it's a far cheaper alternative - try imagining screw an American for 7 days.

It's always advisable to bargain with Indians....most of them want to take US customers for a ride, but they are still your good bet cuz they are technically sound. Do your homework well and wish you good luck.

Generally your internet provider allows you webhosting with your service, you just need an FTP program to access it. Get in touch with your internet provider and then do a search for a free FTP software (I use CORE FTP Lite for free). You can also create your own domain name and have it forwarded to your internet-space (I use #1 Cheap Domains)

Usually, when you're given a domain name and webspace, you will have to configure your webspace to respond to those accessing the domain name. Some webspace provider have its own control panel (cPanel, Plesk, Virtuozzo, etc) that will allow you to defined the domain name to direct traffic to your webspace.

In some cases, when you were given the webspace and the domain name, it's already linked.

Check with your service provider customer support for documentation on how to configure your domain name to work with your webspace.

It really depends on how much these videos will be accessed. You need a great deal of diskspace and bandwidth. Shared hosting probably will not work for you. You need to do some calculations to estimate the diskspace and bandwidth you will need.

A dedicated server costs $100+ a month.

Our web host service says we have to enter html code pointing to a web page containing the file. They also say we have a page available with our package, but they can't help me with the code. I need to know the best way to do this. Can't I just embed the graphic in the emails somehow? (Intuitively something tells me that's not going to work - How could it?) So anyway, how do I get access to this page they're telling me I have, then get the graphic of our logo loaded there? I guess by then I'll know the html code to enter in our email signature(s).

The way to do it is to place the signature image file on your web server, in a publicly available place. Then put the HTML that links to your image into the signature space for your e-mail. If you are using a client like Outlook, you need to make sure to configure it to *not* attach linked images to the e-mail message.

Just put something like the following in your signature:

The only other option is to embed the image into the e-mail, as you said. The downside of this is that every e-mail you send will look like it has an attachment, and people will probably be confused by this.

Hi there, I have to do this assignment. Basically ive been asked to suggest suitable technologies for building a intranet for a small size business (40 employees) with connection to Internet.

The business is an internet travel agency - selling holiday packages. To store the users details you would need a DBMS such as MYSQL or MS Access. You would also need a scripting language to work with the DBMS such as PHP or ASP.

These could both be implemented with the use of paypal.

If you get an external solution, then you need a SSL certificate which is used to encypt the customer/transcation information over the net. So the information will not be compromised. For the storage, I would suggest using a mySQL database.

Thousands are having all kinds of problems with their mail since the new format, with Server Farm issues with Original Mail AND Beta Mail, several months ago!

Yahoo! and Sun Java are also having conflicts. Rather than trying to work around them, here is the easy and fastest way to cure them (for most). Go to Tools, open Internet Options, and select Advance tab. Scroll down the list and see if you have Microsoft Virtual Machine listed, if so, uncheck the 2 java鈥檚 listed. Make sure JIT is checked, click apply then ok. and then Close. This lets MSN virtual machine launch Yahoo! mail. I reccomend that you use Original Mail until beta works out the bugs. FYI, beta means TESTING. Go back to IE6 which works just fine and is problem free. It is still installed on your pc. If you are using Yahoo Mail Plus, and your server farm has problems, switch to the free service until things are worked out.

If not:

You will have less problems with Mail if you sign in via Messenger! Go to preferences, general, then check box: Automatically sign me in when I click a Yahoo! link in Messenger. Then click on the little envelope icon on top of messenger box. Or go to My Yahoo and click on your mail link. Or click on the Big RED Y! on the Yahoo! Toolbar. Bottom line is any link that already has you signed in!!!

A few of months ago, we started a free web hosting service. It has attracted lots of users.

I am interested in using mod_rewrite so that when someone clicks on a link to a multimedia file, they get a page with a "Click here to download the file" link.

This will give us an opportunity to put some ads on that page, and hopefully make some money from the bandwidth we are giving away for free.

otherwise, you may send mimetype audio/x-mp3 to pop-up a "download" window of your visitor's browser. it's not a mod_rewrite issue.

If you are thinking of just sharing pictures, I would recommend this website: http://www.photobucket.com and give the username and password to your family members so they can see the photos. It's very fast and efficient. If you're wanting to keep them updated on other things besides photos, however, then why not just start a blog they can visit? Like on xanga.com...that way you don't need to worry about FTP and designing the website. Xanga is very simple to update and for others to view. If you're really wanting a domain, and a cheaper one, try godaddy.com. They are pretty cheap ~ good luck!

Oh btw, if you do get a domain, you'll need Notepad to write the HTML or what I use (Frontpage) is easier so you don't have to memorize HTML codes...and WS_FTP LE to upload it. I am actually in the process of making a web design sort of business. It's usually personal sites with blogs and they offer like tutorials and stuff and usually they'll have an application form. I have a domain site http://squishypets.com, but I'm not currently looking for any hostees. Sorry. Try looking through these kinds of sites though. Good luck!

My web hosting service provides info on how many visits and hits my website gets, but I don't understand exactly what hits is. Since I have, in June, 750 visits, and 58,000 hits. How are they related to each other?

Just start it at 3,123,984 and show your friends what a great site you have. Or do you?

We suggest that you not have a counter on your site. But, without a counter, how do you know what your traffic is?

Use a web traffic analysis program.

Your web host should automatically provide you with a traffic analysis program. For some of you, their freebie may not be enough to tell you all that you want to know.

The diffrence between 8GB and 10GB is simply how much traffic you sites going to be able to cope with. If theres a question of higher/lower prices here, consider, is your site going to have a lot of visits? That is, will it be a big site? If so, you'll want as much bandwith as possible, if it's a site you don't expect to get big, the lower bandwith is proborly a better idea

MySQL database set up for a browser based game?

I just recently got Yahoo's Web Hosting Service and MySQL/phpmyadmin. I wanted to set up a browser based game which I have the entire PHP game sitting in a folder on my PC but I do not know how to get it onto MySQL, nor set up a database within MySQL for the game itself. I have played around with it and gave it a try but everytime I get going and feel like Im getting close to something I get hit with errors. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The PHP code needs to go on the hosting server, but not in the database. Does the game even need a MySQL database? There should be instructions in the game documentation on how to install it. PHPMySQLAdmin is a PHP tool for administering a MySQL database, not a tool for getting PHP into a MySQL database.

Has anyone else had this insane of a problem?

14 year yahoo account suspended and lost because of Answers. I was a level 6 with 45% best answers. A few violations for political reasons, (im a very conservative republican and passonate about my beliefs) Nothing ever vulgar, sexual, racist. Perhaps a bit of a smart *** on a few answers, but all in fun and even though funny...they were accurate answers. Today I get a notification my account was lost. Really the 14 year old screen name really doesnt matter, nothing really important on there. However, attached to that account was my yahoo business account. A business website Ive had for about 4 years that generates about 4 grand a month and I have spent about 25K this year marketing that online business. I cant get any answers from Yahoo of why my account was suspended, or if I can get my business back.

A question.....Does ANYONE know if I can still transfer my yahoo business account to another web hosting service or even if I can at all
